The Last of the Red Hot Lovers
Amazon Reviews
Eva and Kurt knew each other as children—the kind of familiar that makes you laugh before you even speak. After high school, life takes them in different directions: marriages, families, careers, and decades of distance. Then, sixty-two years later, they find each other again… and the spark doesn’t return quietly.
This candid memoir explores intimacy, aging, and the unexpected intensity of late-life romance—right down to the questions people don’t always say out loud: Does love still feel electric? Do the body parts still work? And when love arrives, can it survive disapproval from the ones who think they get a vote?

Jenna Browning, a willowy blonde with an angel face, has it all—or so it seems on the outside. Inside, she’s tormented. Expected to be perfect as a child and perfect as a wife, she finally breaks free: she quits her job, divorces her husband, and begins a journey of self‑discovery that leads her to the edges of heaven and hell.
Along the way, she writes a romance novel inspired by the wreckage around her—an abusive husband, a friend who betrays her, and a lawyer eager to step into the role of “replacement husband.” But her heart remains haunted by a single memory: an arrogant young boy with brooding black eyes—someone she met once… and can’t forget.
• A dramatic journey of reinvention after leaving an abusive relationship
• Emotional tension between longing, freedom, and the pull of the past
• Romantic intrigue with betrayal, temptation, and hard‑won self‑worth
• A story that blurs the line between the life she lived and the story she writes

Ethel Ann Shaffer was born and raised in Tiltonsville, Ohio, along the banks of the Ohio River. Her family lived three doors from the public library, and Ethel Ann read voraciously. After her first marriage dissolved, she headed for Ventura, California with her two daughters. After relocating, her writing career took off. She worked in various law firms to support her daughters, becoming a paralegal. She also wrote of her experiences in her abusive marriage. Woman’s World paid her $500 an essay. The abusive memories depressed her so she started writing humorous articles for local and national magazines and newspapers.
In her fifties, Ethel Ann graduated magna cum laude from California State University Northridge with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. She was elected president of the San Fernando Valley branch of the California Writers Club for two separate terms, ten years apart. She is also a pro-member of the Romance Writers of America. She is a member of LinkedIn and has 2,889 followers at this time.
In 2004, she published her first novel titled Secret Torment under the name Ethel Ann Pemberton. Her new release, The Last of the Red Hot Lovers, a memoir, is about meeting up with a childhood sweetheart and rekindling their love decades later leading to love and marriage. Ethel Ann and Theodore, her husband of fourteen years, live in Valencia, California with their Siamese cat, Coco. Theodore is the other half of the duo depicted in the memoir.

A thought‑provoking and heartfelt read for anyone who enjoys stories about personal growth, resilience, and love that lingers long after the final page. The story beautifully explores themes of emotional abuse, betrayal, and reclaiming one’s identity, while weaving in romance, longing, and the complexity of unresolved love. The inner struggle is raw and honest, and her voice feels authentic as she navigates her path to finding herself.
